Travel by Air to Hong Kong:

Norman Foster (who also designed the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank) is responsible for masterminding the fantastic new airport at Chek Lap Hok. The new terminal is the largest single airport building in the world and was designed to soothe the fears of those who dislike flying. The ingenious use of light and space within the building allows visitors to see out to the fields, planes and sea, the idea being that this should be a welcoming place to enter and stay. The facilities here too are fantastic and the airport has the largest retail space of its kind in the world.

As one would expect from a site this grand, there are flights from the airport to virtually everywhere in the world. Within China, there are numerous flights per day to Beijing (4hr), Shanghai (2hr), Xian (2hr 30 mins), Guangzhou(30 mins), Guillin (1hr), and Xiamen (1hr). Hong Kong is a notoriously expensive airport to fly out of however. Ctrip offer flights from throughout China direct to Hong Kong.

There are two ways to get to the new airport. The Airport Express train is very fast, efficient and high tech. The trip from the airport to Central takes 23 minutes and the trains are very punctual. The train costs HK$ 70 one way but, a return used within twenty four hours is the same price! The trains stop at midnight. There is also a good Airport Bus which runs through the city (bus No. A11 or A12) out to the airport approximately every fifteen minutes. The trip costs HK$35 one way and takes about 50 minutes. There are a few night buses too. A taxi should cost around $350 to Hong Kong Island.
One thing to bear in mind is the compulsory Airport Tax.
